Irelands Economic Recovery and meeting the challenge of Brexit

The lecture was co-organised with Embassy of Ireland. The Guest Speaker was Mr Michael Noonan T.D. Minister for Finance, Ireland. He spoke on Irelands response to the economic crisis of 2008 and the reasons behind the Irish economys remarkable recovery. He will address the range of issues that Brexit poses for Ireland as its nearest neighbour and largest trading partner prepares to leave the European Union. Minister Noonan will also discuss the challenges facing small, open economies in an uncertain world. The event was chaired by Dr. David Lee, Vice President of the Economic Society of Singapore. The lecture was well received by the Ambassadors, economists, ESS members, academicians and the media

24 March ESS 120 (2nd Series): Contentious Issues in Health


The Guest Speaker was the Group Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Health Services Pte Ltd. Prof. Kiat has been a Board Member of Singapore Health Services Pte Ltd. since January 2012. He is an Emeritus Consultant at SGH Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chairman of SingHealth Foundation.

The Guest Speaker, DR JESUS FELIPE (Advisor, Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department, Managing Editor, Asian Development Review, Asian Development Bank spoke on The Debate about the Sources of Growth in East Asia After a Quarter of a Century: Much Ado about Nothing. This paper reviews what the profession has learned during the last 25 years about East Asias growth using growth accounting exercises and estimations of production functions.

21 September ESS 120: Contentious Issues on Labour and Manpower


The Guest Speaker is Mr AUBECK KAM the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Manpower. This third episode of ESS 120 discussed about the labour market issues in the Singapore economy. What are the likely impact of economic restructuring, technology disruption and the productivity slowdown on jobs in Singapore? What are the policy responses to these trends?

The Guest Speaker for the public lectures was Professor Seppo Honkapohja, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Finland. He spoke on the “Persistent Slowdowns: How Can Policy Help?” He discussed the sluggish macroeconomic performance of advanced market economies in the years after the Great Recession has raised interest in the possibility of the economy becoming stuck in a stagnation state for long periods and commented on the various APP programs and outline a theoretical approach to analyse the efficacy of APPs using a New Keynesian model.
