Ms Chua Bee-Lian Valerie (蔡美莲), Level Head of Economics, Nanyang Junior College: Ms Chua’s teaching philosophy focuses on how theoretical concepts can be applied to real-world situations. She nurtures reflective learners, who have the confidence to self-assess their learning, and take steps forward to improve.
 
Her mastery of Economics is evident in her teaching, where she connects current events to economic principles through thoughtful and well-structured lessons. Through discussions on contemporary issues, she enables students to strengthen their analytical and critical thinking skills. She uses inquiry-based learning (IBL) activities to guide students to formulate and investigate their own economic questions, fostering deeper engagement and ownership of learning in the process.
 
Ms Chua’s commitment to student development is reflected in her adaptable and personalised approach to teaching. She developed a self-assessment framework for her students to use, and this has strengthened their assessment literacy and self-directed learning, as they evaluate their thinking and responsessystematically to identify areas for growth. This framework is now adopted across the school’s Economics department. She also leverages technology for real-time student engagement and differentiated learning, creating a dynamic and responsive classroom environment.
 
As a curriculum leader, Ms Chua has made notable contributions to professional learning within her school’s Economics department. She leads regular professional learning sessions and has developed a structured assessment roadmap that guides teachers in designing appropriate assessments. Her collaborative leadership style ensures collective adoption of innovative teaching strategies, resulting in professional growth across her team in both pedagogical and assessment practices.
Mr Lim Mong Khai Melvin (林茂凯), Level Head of Economics, St Andrew’s Junior College: Mr Lim demonstrates innovative Economics teaching by combining strong subject knowledge with excellent teaching methods to create impactful learning experiences for both students and fellow educators.
 
Mr Lim’s subject mastery and pedagogical skills are evident in how he brings contemporary economic issues into the classroom. Through carefully designed inquiry-based learning resources, he guides students to examine local and global developments, from government policies to broader trends like demographic change, climate impact, and technological disruption. He also enlivens theoretical concepts by connecting them with contemporary events, transforming current developments – such as concert ticket pricing and dynamic pricing in the fast-food industry – into engaging learning opportunities that resonate with students and make Economics accessible and relevant. Mr Lim’s dynamic teaching approach strengthens students’ understanding of economic concepts and develops their ability to think analytically about real-world issues.
 
To enhance student engagement and learning, Mr Lim leverages digital platforms for real-time feedback to address misconceptions, model quality reasoning, and engage students in co-constructing knowledge. This dynamic feedback process develops students’ critical thinking and collaborative skills. Recognising varying student needs, he creates tiered digital tasks that allow students to progress at their own pace.. He creates inclusive, supportive classrooms by adapting instruction to diverse learner needs while fostering an environment where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.

He is also an active member of the Economics Networked Learning Community, where he co-developed an escape room-themed resource that enables teachers to deliver content in a novel and interactive way. His thoughtful integration of digital tools and commitment to peer learning have empowered educators to innovate whilst staying grounded in sound pedagogy.
